School Dinner Scandal

See the source imageSchool dinner scandal-By Abi and Natalia

In yesterday’s news it was announced that from the first of April free school lunches will be taken away from the poorer kids in society. This means less children will be able to eat lunch at school which would normally be their only meal of the day. It has been said that up to a million children who once were benefited now will get nothing.

School dinners can be a very controversial thing, especially since not everybody eats them and some people bring packed lunches, so were here to find out what people prefer and what is possibly the heathiest option.

Out of a group of 44 students, 33 have school dinners and only 11 have packed lunches. That is three times more students having school dinners- but is that the healthier option?

We asked a few students these 3 questions: What do you usually have as either your school dinners or packed lunch? Out of the 2, which do you prefer? And, Do you think what you have is the healthier option?

See the source imageWe asked a student named Isobelle, who regularly has school dinners, these questions and she said: She usually has pasta pots, and prefers school dinners, but she thinks it isn’t as healthy as they can be quite greasy, but there are vegetables in it which is good. Overall, she thinks packed lunches are the healthier option.

We also asked a student named Irfan, who usually eats packed lunches, and he said: He usually has pasta, orange juice, crisps and an apple in his packed lunch. He prefers packed lunches as they can be healthier and you can choose what goes in them. Overall he thinks they can be healthier depending on what you put in them.

We asked the head chef at our school what types of foods go in the meals and what the most popular thing on the menu is. He told us that he uses a lot of vegetables in the food-but said they are discreetly put in so students don’t notice them-and interchanges between white and brown rice which give fibre and nutrients. He said the most popular thing on the menu is the chicken burgers and wedges-which aren’t the healthiest but, are only served every couple of weeks as a treat.

What do you think about these issues?
