Text Box: A picture of horse racingFollowing a six-day shutdown, 174 racing stables reopened on Wednesday 27th February. This was the result of a major outbreak of one of the most contagious disease for horses, equine influenza.

At young Reporter, we are looking at the effects that this shut down has had on the horse-riding community. Horse enthusiasts Genevieve and Anisah at Bluecoat Wollaton Academy have been interviewed to find their opinion on equine influenza.

Anisah stated that she believes that the latest outbreak has had a big effect financially for horse racing and on horse racing companies because lots of horse races have been cancelled.

Genevieve felt that there was much ignorance in the general public about equine flu and that the news coverage had been quite limited. She explained that she don’t feel like the flu will spread because the shutdowns were quite far away from Nottingham, so therefore we are not worried, but we are always prepared in case of an outbreak.

We are often complacent about this disease because we expect hoses to be vaccinated however the proportion of horses vaccinated in the UK(around 30%) falls well below that which is required to prevent a major disease outbreak (around 70%)

I did a survey to see how many people in an average class know about equine flu the results were 5/19 which is very little. If we can educate more people who either own a horse or may own one in the future about the importance of horse vaccinations, then we could limit the amount of horses catching this terrible virus.
