The Lent Litter Pick

The Lent Litter Pick

On Monday 4th March and Tuesday 5th of March 2019 a litter pick was organised for Bluecoat Wollaton Secondary School, and with this litter pick came a lot of strange discoveries.

Miss Freeman told us that she organised the litter picking event for Lent activities (to pray, too fast and to give) as well as clean up the school as she believes all the litter is a major issue.

When asked about what kind affects doing a litter pick would have we were told that it would raise the awareness of the students that took part and would eventually reach all of the school. She said the students who took part would ‘become advocates’ for the school.

Over 2 days the team were able to pick up 8 bags of waste from our school and even beyond. The items of rubbish that were encountered the most were: Pasta Pots,                sandwich wrappers and to half-drunk                                      water bottles- which Miss Freeman said was a                             waste of liquid as well as bad for the environment.

We spoke to some of the students who were part of the litter pick, all of them were affected after taking part in the event. All students who we asked had a different view on rubbish and litter left around the school. One suggested that they make posters about all the litter straight after doing the litter pick.

Courage, year 9, was interviewed. He told us that he took part in the litter pick to make the school a better place as well as for the religious reasons. He told us that ‘God looks after us; now we have to look after his creations.’ He also told us that after doing the litter picking he thought it would be a good idea to ‘do an assembly about it.’ and that now after seeing the consequences of littering he wouldn’t even think about littering anymore but if he saw someone else doing it he’d remind them to put their waste in the bin.

Tristan, also year 9, spoke to us about the litter pick as well. He told us that he was happy that he could and that he thought that the fact that rubbish was in other people’s houses was terrible. He also was happy he could give back to the always helpful site team.

We, as a school, need to use the bins more, as well as when to use the recycling bins. Using the bins would make the school a cleaner, friendlier and a more inviting place.
